2 June (cont)

We had a quick unpacking session and hit the road again at 15h05. We decided to drive North….I rather like watching the birds at Kwang. Just as we drove out of Nossob we saw 5 bat eared foxes. It is actually quite amazing that on my previous 8 trips to KTP I only ever saw bat- ear foxes on a night drive ….now they were everywhere. Not ten minutes out of Nossob I noticed something small moving in the bushes. We back tracked and it was a cat…at last a cat!!!! Albeit a small cat ….at least it was a cat. I think he was busy hunting and was not too interested in posing for me.

I now reckoned our luck was changing…we continued to Kwang. There were many gemsbok and jackals running around and a couple of birds but that was it.

What I did notice is that all the jackals that we had seen all seemed to running around and eating something small off the ground. I presume it was some or other insect but I could not work out what it was even when I looked through my bins.

We turned around at Kwang and headed back to camp. We stopped for a while at Cubitje Quap and then had a bit of time before the gate closed so we had a quick look at Rooidam and we saw NOTHING ! So much for the luck changing.
We visited the birdhide later on and watched a spotted eagle owl hunt. I love owls so this was really enjoyable. Jackals also popped in for a quick drink and then continued into the camp to harass everybody. They are becoming quite a problem. No matter how much we chased them they kept on coming back. At one stage while we were braaing there were 5 jackals around us.
